What’s wrong with me?
Over the past month I’ve been doing some work for a plastic surgeon, as I described in this post from my pearlwriting blog. Most of this work involved me exploring websites and blogs devoted to plastic surgery, and wow, I’ve learned some crazy things.
One weird lesson is that there are a peculiar number of sites devoted to discussing and putting down celebrity plastic surgery. Those sites bored me pretty quickly, and weren’t part of my assignment, anyway. I also learned that there are some very creepy things that people do to their bodies. In the way that one link leads to another on the Internet, I stumbled across a post on the Top Ten Physically Modified Human Beings. I couldn’t look away and I’m sure my mouth hung open the whole time I was reading it.
In talking to my girls about what I’ve learned about cosmetic sugery, First Born asked me, “Would you ever get plastic surgery?” I said no, but each time I’d pull up a description of toe liposuction or tummy tucks, I had to keep asking myself that question. What about my nose? In seventh grade I though it looked like a mushroom but no, it’s fine. I’d like to lose some weight, but liposuction — eew. My breasts are just perfect, imho. What about my prominent Detzner/Hopfner chin? I don’t know. I just don’t think there’s anything wrong with me.
Then I thought I had it. Laser hair removal. Yes! That’s what I would do!
I hate to shave. I think I may get that from my “Natural Woman” mother, who we knew was going out for her yearly hot date with my dad when she’d take out her electric shaver, close the bedroom door, and buzz away. And sorry to be such a lemming, but I only shave because it’s what women are supposed to do. Even if I and my husband do not care. So I’m doing doing it all for you, really, and if you change your mind and think I look better with hairy legs, after I’ve spent all that money on laser hair removal, how would I ever please you?

Hi Angelawd! Thanks for your comments on my blog. Wow, I guess the body modification thing really isn’t limited to people trying to look perfect. I followed that link, and it was just like you said, I couldn’t take my eyes off. As for you, I’m glad you feel good about your own self. As for the shaving of the legs… I only shave in the summer. I know shaving is ridiculous, but I just can’t get past the hippie gross-ness of wearing shorts or skirts with hairy legs. But in the winter, when I only wear pants and my husband doesn’t care? Why bother?
