Wordpress.com to Wordress.org and Bluehost

To use Wordpress.org, you actually download their application to your host or computer. Wordpress claims that they have a famous “one-click” download to a host, or a five-minute installation on your home computer.

Thursday night, I botched my first attempt at the one-click; Bluehost guided me through a quick and easy install after which I could see my files but had no idea what to do next. I browsed through help files that recommended I edit my config.php file, but I couldn’t help thinking this went beyond one-click work and there had been some sort of user error. I went to bed rending my clothes and gnashing my teeth. I was not pleasant to be around.

Friday after I completed my work commitments, I deleted everything and started over, and found that in fact, my problem had been user error. At the end of the install process there was a message that told me exactly what to do next, and in my excitement, I clicked right past it. Darn.

Now that wordpress was installed, I needed to move all my angelawd posts, categories, and pages over to .org. This was easily done by going into my angelawd dashboard, going to the options page, exporting the files to my computer, and then importing them to .org. It was so easy. However, I did lose my blogroll and will have to rebuild it.

The final step is a redirect. I have left many links throughout the internet to the URL www.angelawd.wordpress.com; my new address was www.angelawd.com and I sure didn’t want to lose anyone. After a little searching I found the excellent site blog-well.com and found the redirect instructions. A few steps later, I had acheived the success that you see before you today, and went off to my Date Night with the Big Guy with great rejoicing.

Next: picking my new blog theme and customizing. This is gonna take some time.

    Hey Angelawd,

Thanks for the mention and the nice words; we are glad you found it useful (it was tricky for us too - so you’re not the only one ;)

BTW - in case you are still looking for a theme; I found a really cool post at smashing magazine called Excellent free high quality WordPress themes that saved me going through the themes list at WordPress.

    Good luck!
