Kind of like the end of a first date.
I had a business meeting this morning with an artist/web designer that I met through church. We have been talking about working on some projects together, and caught up on each other’s lives at the same time. When we left the coffee shop. I offered her a ride home, but she felt like walking.
Then things became awkward. I usually hug my friends goodbye, but would shake hands with a business partner; which was she? We kind of made eye contact and shuffled our feet through a lengthy goodbye while we decided what to do next. It was slightly uncomfortable, like when the guy’s driving you home from the first date and you’re trying to decide whether you’ll kiss or hug or shake hands - or maybe even give him a karate chop on the back of the neck.
So I gave a silly salute/wave and got into my car. I didn’t even walk her to her door.

OK, I know that you’ve had these rockin’ new digs for awhile, but I just have to say again how much I love them! Beautiful.
And thanks for all of the great stories. You are a wonderful writer and I so enjoy reading what you have to say.
Thanks

Well, I think it was a good idea you didn’t kiss her…

Reason Number 2,448 Why I Love Being a Southerner. Never any question, it’s a hug.
I do agree with Suburban Correspondent, though. Unless she’s a really, really good friend. Or you’re both college girls.

Ahna, glad you like it! And thanks for the writing compliment.
Suburban, I think we’re all glad I didn’t kiss her…
Kalynne, that must be the legendary Southern friendliness. You probably call each other ’sugar’ while you’re hugging, too. I love that.

Come to think of it, I’ve never heard “sugar” used that way by anyone younger than 65. The younger girls call each other “baby” (with a really extended long a). But the hugging really is pervasive: I get hugs from my students — guys included — when we run into each other at the Kroger. Good thing I’m not married to a Yankee, huh?

I’m with Kalynne - Huggin’s the way to go in this particular situation. And in my world, the sugar equivalent is Darlin’. OH! That reminds me of a joke I need to post! ;o)

I like darlin’ too.
I’ll go over and check out your joke!
