Late Night Love Talk

My husband and I were watching one of those “heartwarming” TV shows, when I realized there was one Important Talk that we haven’t had yet. I took his hand and held it gently.

“Honey, if I died young, I would want you to remarry. I mean, if you wanted to remarry. I mean, I don’t really want you to fall in love again, but I do want you to be happy.”

“Me too. Um, I guess I’m too old to die young, though.”

“I don’t know. I’ve heard of 80-year-olds finding love in a nursing home.”

“Yuck.”

“Old people gotta have love, too. But honey, I’m just saying I want you to be happy. And if you’re happy by finding another woman and marrying her, then that’s what I want you to do. You know, like after you’ve mourned me for a while. But just promise me…” I gripped his hand tighter. “Just don’t love her the way you love me, ok? Love her differently.”

I looked over to see he had tears in his eyes. “I could never love anybody like I love you.”

“Honey, don’t cry. I’m not gonna die. Well, not right now, anyway. At least I don’t think so. Hey, why don’t we see what else is on TV?”

We’ve had that talk, too. Only my comment was more like, if you don’t want me coming back and haunting your butt, you better find somebody who will keep you from turning into a total hermit. He would, too, ya know.
