Kitchen shopping with my daughter

Jessie is moving into a new apartment at the end of the month. She’s leaving her roommate behind, so the packing process includes sorting out her kitchenware from Kim’s. And that means we get to go shopping!

We found an online site, Shopwiki, that searches for all sorts of kitchen and dining tools sold at other sites, based on your search criteria. First of all, Jessie needed some kitchen knives. She claims that she has plenty of knives, but I had to gently tell her that those weren’t real knives, they were dull pieces of metal too old for Joe and I to sharpen anymore. We gave them to her because, well, we didn’t really think she’d be cooking much. The kitchen knives section not only shows a variety of knife sets and blocks, but also has a knife buying guide which was much more effective than my personal opinion that she needed a better set.

I had forgotten how long it takes to build up a truly useful collection of kitchen gadgets, but I see that Jessie’s supply is pitifully small. On this site I found a couple of collections of gadgets that have all the ordinary items like spatulas and ladles, but also tools like a lemon zester and a garlic press. She doesn’t understand about things like lemon zesters yet, but someday she’ll need it and she’ll be glad she bought it. Now that’s she’s cooking more often, I’m going to talk her into buying the panini press I spotted on Shopwiki - so that I can borrow it, of course. Now that I have an adult daughter, I get all the benefits of her gadgets without the expense!

I would like to move from my parents till the end of the year. Somehow it surprised me how much things I have to buy :-) And knives are very important. At home, we have lots of knives, but they are old and are not sharp any more. For now I need only few knives, like a knife for bread, meat, vegetables. Or small, medium and large sleek knives and a large and medium knife with teeth - the larger is for bread and the medium one with smaller teeth is great for tomatoes.
I cook often, but I did not need any other kinds of knives…

Knives … SHARP knives are critical! I love to cook, but I hate it when I have dull knives.

Sounds like fun shopping with your daughter. I hope my daughters will want to shop with me again someday. :-)

Sounds like lots of fun…I’m thinking of getting myself a good filet knife for mother’s day…hmmm, did that sound right? I have to admit that I have lots of Pampered Chef stuff that I only use once in a while, but they are sure nice to have when you need them…
    Happy Mother’s Day!

You’re far too evolved for me, Angela. I’d never know about some of these up and coming things had I not read your blog! Happy Mothers Day, my friend, I hope it is a good one. Or at least not a bad one. I’m shooting for not a bad one, personally. Long story. xo

I’ve been on an unsuccessful gadget moratorium because I already have too many things that clutter up the kitchen. I bought a very expensive super nice chef’s knife which I *love* but also cut myself every time I use it.

@Susan and @Josie, sharp knives are goood.

@Elizabeth, did you get your filet knife?

@Stacey, it’s Joe that’s done this to me. I didn’t know about all these gadgets. But if you like fresh garlic, I would HIGHLY recommend a garlic press.

@Pamela, when I first started using good knives I cut myself a lot, too. You need a different technique with the good ones - but they are also easier to use, right?
