Joe and I love our beverages just as much as we love food. On this page, you’ll find some of our favorite wines, beers, and other beverages. I’m also hoping this will help me remember what I like when I get to the wine shop, and I’m confronted with three thousand bottles of wine with vaguely familiar names.
Unless otherwise stated, all the wines I mention here are in the $5-$10 price range.
Gluten-free beer! Celiac sufferers rejoice! Since I’ve recently tried to eliminate wheat from my diet, I was happy to run across Red Bridge. Not only is it produced and distributed by Anheuser-Busch, which means it will be relatively easy to find in stores, but they’ve also manage to make it taste like one of the wheat beers I love the best - Leinenkugel Red. In fact, when my highly gluten-intolerant sister-in-law came to visit, and I gave her one, I do believe it brought tears to her eyes. She hasn’t had a single beer in seven years.
Rosso di Toscana, 2005. On our honeymoon in Tuscany, we wandered through the twisting streets of Cortona one day. We found a grocer that sold boar sausage and buffalo mozzarella with black truffles, and brought these back to our little villa for a quick breakfast each day. When I tasted this wine, it brought back all the earthy, minerally tastes of the rich sausage and cheese. Light bodied, but rich and delicious!
Sideshow Garnacha, Spain. This is a velvety dark red with hints of tobacco and raisin. Rich and sensuous. I thought it reminded me of port, but Joe didn’t agree. It would be good with ham or barbecued red meats.
Lindemans Chardonnay, South Africa, 2006. A lush, full-bodied Chardonnay with pear and caramel flavors. A good dessert wine, or would pair well with salads or poultry. We enjoyed it with garlic scallops over linguine last night.
Dead Guy Ale, Oregon. This is a spicy, rich ale with a hint of bitter hops. Our friend John brought this over in celebration of his 50th birthday.
